City jewellers agreed that over the last few years, this day has become the most popular and auspicious event to buy jewellery.

Vijay Diwan, director of Diwansons Jewellers, said, "Buying on Dhanteras has become a huge rage over the last three to four years. The interesting thing is that thirty per cent of our Dhanteras buyers today are Bengalis. The value of what is bought is not important but people have to buy something even if it''s a silver coin. We try to match our stock with all kinds of people with different buying patterns."

This year, Diwansons Jewellers also has a unique offer. For all Dhanteras buyers, senior citizens will get a discount on design charges of jewellery, according to age-- the discount matching the age of the customer. And if there is an occasion to celebrate, Kolkata celebrities can''t be far behind. Actress Pallavi Chatterjee admitted that though not a festival of Bengalis, they have really started celebrating Dhanteras for the past few years. "I think it''s a really nice and auspicious occasion for women to buy jewellery. Though I haven''t really planned anything this year, who knows I may just end up buying something for myself," said Chatterjee.
madhurima.nandy@timesgroup.com
